HOPE Leadership

What is HOPE?

Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE) was founded in 1989 by a dynamic and politically influential group of Latinas representing the full spectrum of business, political, and social tenets. For the past 26 years, HOPE has been walking hand in hand with Latinas who are pushing the limits, breaking barriers and defining what it means to be a leader. The goal of the Institute is to train Latinas in vital leadership and advocacy skills, enabling them to create fundamental change within their local neighborhoods and across California. HOPE Board Members, corporate sponsors, volunteers and supporters will come together to provide annual training and conferences that empower Latinas in thier communities, state, and nation.

The HOPE Leadership Institute (HLI) changed my life in multiple ways. HLI exposed me to the political process at city, state and federal levels. I also learned to track, and analyze legislation and advocate for families and schools. HLI connected me professionally with many key players in the government sector as well as introducing me to a community of exceptional Latinas. The sisterhood that is formed by being a graduate of the HLI is priceless. I found a community of other like-minded women whom are always there for each other both professionally and personally. The HLI has created a pipeline of Latina leadership in California, committed to improving political and economic parity for all communities. The HLI has an alumnae base of nearly 450 Latinas, many of whom serve in public office, or on statewide boards and commissions. Alumnae represent all major regions of California and cross-cut professional sectors.

The HOPE Leadership Institute (HLI) is the first and only statewide leadership program specifically designed for professional Latinas in California. The goal of the Institute is to train Latinas in vital leadership and advocacy skills, enabling them to create fundamental change within their local neighborhoods and across California. The HLI provides a learning exchange between participants and leading experts, academics, and practitioners in the fields of civic engagement, leadership, political campaigning, health, education, and economic empowerment. Every year, the HLI selects 20 exceptional Latinas from across California to paritipate in a nine month, leadership program that spans January through September and includes five 3-4 day training sessions. Training sessions are intense, full days, and include academic seminars, personal assessments, group work, group presentations, lobbying and advocacy, field trips, networking receptions, and conference attendance. In between sessions, participants are assigned both individual and group research projects.
