What is Casa 0101 Theater?

CASA 0101 is dedicated to providing vital arts, cultural, and educational programs — in theater, digital filmmaking, art and dance — to Boyle Heights, thereby nurturing the future storytellers of Los Angeles who will someday transform the world.

CASA 0101 was founded by Josefina Lopez, author of Real Women Have Curves, in 2000 to fulfill her vision of bringing art and live theater programs to the community she grew up in, Boyle Heights.   CASA 0101 operated for 11 years at its original location – a converted former bridal shop – and in September of 2011, moved to its new home: a fully-equipped 99-seat theater featuring an art gallery and a dedicated classroom.  This space is only 1 block away from its original location – now renamed “Little Casa” – and both spaces are a part of CASA 0101.  Mainstage productions are presented year-round at CASA 0101 Theater, while smaller shows and workshop productions are presented at Little Casa.  From its humble beginnings operating out of a converted store front, CASA 0101 has established itself as a leading arts venue for Los Angeles’ East Side, presenting  theatrical productions,  film festivals, and other special events year round.  CASA 0101 also offers year-round, free classes in acting and other arts disciplines for youth, and free and low-cost classes for adults in acting and writing.

Luz is the former, founding Board President of CASA 0101 Theater. She ws the co-chair of the capital fund campaign and responsible for raising funds to secure a new venue, that is five-times larger that CASA 0101's previous space. Luz has over 15 years of experience in grassroots organizing in the Latino community and was volunteer at CASA 0101 since it first opened its doors in 2000, until 2011. She believes that to write and perform one’s own story is a political act that sheds light on the human condition, ultimately changing political consciousness.
