Andean Alliance for Sustainable Development

The focus of this consultancy was to understand the local community and context of remote areas of Calca, Cuzco in order to making better policy recommendations to local government officials. The scope of this work involved designing, organizing, and implementation of research tools to survey rural areas where communication, transportation, infrastructure, and distances pose special challenges. This even involved walking door-to-door and conducting surveys with the assistance of Quechuan interpreters. This experience was provided through a field study course called, Advanced Topics in Policy Analysis, which was led by MIIS Vice President, Jeff Dayton-Johnson and the our guiding research question was: how does connectivity affect poverty in Calca, Cuzco?

Consultancy Project

The Andean Alliance (AASD) exists to raise the standard of living for indigenous Peruvians in high altitude communities. All projects – including our flagship greenhouse program – address a specific community need and are designed to be educational, collaborative, and participatory. The fundamental difference between the AASD and other NGOs is that they use the collective intelligence of stakeholders and scholars to address the unique needs of each community. Many other NGOs rely on a “one-size fits all” approach, which could in turn lead to unsuccessful projects. AASD defines success through impact, and their projects are both successful and sustainable because they remain accountable to the unique needs of each community.
